Short description: Translating as Cabinet of Curiosities, WUNDERKAMMER is an evolving exhibition of around 11-15 small works that reference the idea of the archive, or which are traces of an event or a larger piece or story. Devised from the outset as an exhibition that would travel (cheaply) from it’s starting point at Clarke Gallery in Berlin to other destinations, an important consideration was that all work would fit within the confines of a single carry-on suitcase. A new work, by an artist local to the exhibition venue, is taken on each time. All work is for sale. Sales of work help finance the exhibition’s onwards journey as well as making room for new pieces to be taken on at each location. So far the exhibition has been shown at Clarke Gallery in Berlin, Eastern Edge Gallery, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada and Franklin Furnace in New York, USA. Media of the works in the exhibition so far include painting, sculpture, photography, performance, sound work, performance ephemera... Accompanying the object-based works in the exhibition is A Slide Show By... This is a performance piece, which involves finding someone local to the exhibition venue to present a slide show of old fashioned slides of travel photographs taken by Elly Clarke on a round the world trip in 2004 to the audience as though they were their own pictures. The people for this are found via Craigslist and Facebook or networks provided by the exhibition venues. Type-written labels with date, title and short text about each work (written by or in close collaboration with each artist) accompanies each piece so that the exhibition is pretty much self contained. It can be shown on a single table top, in a vitrine, as a single curatorial piece to be inserted into a larger exhibition, or can spread out to take up a whole gallery by itself.
