| Short description: An initiative of artists has overcome the Atlantic Ocean in order to compare their positions between Frankfurt am Main and the Brazilian city of São Paulo and hereby starting a dialogue. The link between the continents, countries and cultures is the Brazilian artist Elizabeth Dorazio who, years ago, has chosen Frankfurt as her second home. Dorazio, who has studied art in Brazil, Italy and at the Städel Hochschule evening classes in Frankfurt am Main, is in lively contact with the art scene of both “home towns”. In collaboration with the artist and gallery director Max Pauer, Nikolaus A. Nessler, as well as, on the Brazilian side, Elizabeth’s sister Rosângela Dorazio, Gil Vicente and Manoel Veiga, the group aims to present their works in both cities doing a group exhibition. Nessler, a connoisseur of Brazil, is – inspired by his former stays, is interested in the cultural and social differences between both countries and – like the rest of the group – by the means of the exhibition, inspire a discussion of the audience on both sides. A thrilling common approach consists in the comparison of artistic positions and to see if and which accordance there is despite the geographical and cultural distance. One thing comes out quite clearly: In a globalised world, there are – in spite of different artistic personalities – more connective than separative elements. Questioning and even challenging notions of perception is what all of the artists of the group do: Rosângela Dorazio assimilates a critical and playful dimension of consumption and the mass media, whereas Elizabeth Dorazio creates meditative inner worlds that resemble underwater images in her work. Max Pauer imitates organic structures and yet alienates those structures by aestheticising them in his black and white reverse glass paintings. Nikolaus A. Nessler uses light in installation as a medium to create new spatial experiences for the observer, whereas Gil Vicente develops paintings from his personal associations of the blank spaces between words, lines and paragraphs in printed sheets of paper which he uses as material. Manoel Veiga creates abstract “atmospheres” in his acrylic paintings based on his perception of structures and disregarding the categories of meaning and mimesis. All of the artists are strongly interested in structures – by creating, assimilating or modifying them in their work. | |
